to do list for cambodia

with 4 weeks remaining before my departure, i have begun compiling my to do list.  please feel free to add and suggest activities for my consideration.  periodically check on this entry as more will be added by the hours and days to come!

      • visit my family's home village of kompong berl
      • take an elephant ride in the countryside
      • watch a sunset of angkor on top of phnom bakheng
      • kiss as many apsaras and indradevi statues as possible
      • visit the beaches of kompong som
      • volunteer at a local orphanage
      • attend the cambodian film festival
      • visit royal university of fine arts and attend as many lakhoun niyeay and bassac performances as possible
      • interview talented young khmer artists
      • attend a matching of pradal serey
      • visit tuol sleng prison
      • eat as many tropical fruits as possible

      2 - oooh, good suggestions, emily! :) but as much as i love sour mangoes and climbing it, i'd rather pick a different tree-- the symbol of khmer identity is the palm tree. wanna hear something interesting that old folks say about palm trees?

      during the glory days of angkor and its peak, the territory making up the khmer empire were marked as boundaries using palm trees, bc as you know, maps and the concept of 'national borders' was not fully grasped by rulers. where palm trees grew in mainland se asia, was the scope of angkor's power. unfortunately, and not surprising, our neighbors have been cutting them down since angkor's demise in the 1400s to the present. (Comment this)
